NSW prop Payne Haas has dismissed any speculation about escalating tensions with Maroons player Tino Fa’asuamaleaui before their upcoming clash. The two players, who have previously exchanged blows during the 2020 State of Origin series, will meet again in game two, with Haas having recently earned the title of Man of the Match in the series opener.

Fa’asuamaleaui, known for his aggressive style, hinted he would make the encounter personal, but Haas responded calmly when questioned about a potential repeat of their past altercations. He stated, “Nah, I’m not going out there for that… I just want to do my job and get the win – that’s all that matters.” Acknowledging the current trend of players being sin-binned for fighting, Haas expressed his commitment to focus on the game rather than engage in unnecessary confrontations.

Despite Fa’asuamaleaui’s comments, Haas welcomes the challenge that comes with being a target during Origin games, remarking, “It would be a bit of a worry if it wasn’t personal.” He affirmed the pride associated with representing their respective states and is looking forward to the upcoming match.

Amidst the team’s preparations, Haas had a captivating encounter with newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena, who visited the team camp in Perth. Haas admitted to being “starstruck,” particularly impressed by the UFC belt. Della Maddalena shared his admiration for the “old-school” style of State of Origin, reminiscing about how he was drawn to the sport because of the physical nature of the game, though acknowledging that such confrontations have reduced in recent years.

As for the game itself, Haas will start alongside Max King from Canterbury, with changes in the lineup due to injuries, including the absence of Mitch Barnett. Queensland too have made significant adjustments, notably in changing their captain, with Tom Dearden stepping in for the ousted Daly Cherry-Evans as halfback.

With excitement building ahead of Wednesday’s match, Haas is primed for the challenge, ready to contribute to the team’s success while maintaining a focus on collective achievement over individual rivalries.
