Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has raised concerns regarding certain venues for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, suggesting that some events might be relocated to Sydney. During a recent appearance on the Two Good Sports podcast, he questioned the viability of hosting rowing on the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, pointing to the superior facilities available in Penrith, Sydney. Albanese’s comments come just months after Queensland unveiled its comprehensive vision for the 2032 Games, indicating that a singular location may not accommodate all events.

In response to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Queensland’s government has firmly asserted that the original plan remains unchanged. State Housing Minister Sam O’Connor reiterated that the venues designated for rowing are set and will not be altered. Tennis Queensland is also moving forward with significant upgrades to the Pat Rafter Arena, aiming to create a new 3,000-seat indoor venue, bolstered by confirmation from the Premier that Olympic tennis will be held in Brisbane.

O’Connor dismissed concerns that differing opinions on venue locations might jeopardise the substantial $7 billion funding agreement for the games. He expressed confidence in the existing plan, asserting, "We have a great plan."

Moreover, Rowing Queensland’s Chief Executive Anthea O’Loughlin welcomed the Prime Minister’s involvement in discussions about rowing’s location. She expressed strong support for keeping the rowing events in Queensland, emphasising the importance of the sport’s legacy and ongoing collaboration with various stakeholders to meet international standards.

Overall, Albanese’s comments may signal potential shifts in the Olympic planning, yet both the Queensland government and sporting organisations remain dedicated to executing their established proposals for the 2032 Games.
