Alexa Leary is determined to break her own world record in the 100m freestyle next month, following near misses during the Australian Trials. The talented 23-year-old has issued a strong warning to her competitors as she showcased her impressive ability in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events.

During the Trials, Leary narrowly missed equalling her personal best time in the 50m freestyle, finishing just 0.01 seconds shy. She later delivered a thrilling performance in the 100m, clocking an impressive time of 58.97 seconds. At the halfway mark of the 100m race, she turned in 28.20 seconds, which was more than a quarter of a second faster than her world record split for that distance. However, the final 15 metres were crucial, and Leary finished 0.08 seconds behind her own record time.

Despite the narrow gap, Leary remained unfazed, saying, “Just off it,” while reflecting on her race highlights during an interview with Nine. Her enthusiasm didn’t wane as she confessed, “I just can’t hold back (after the Paralympics). I’ve just got to let go… I can’t stop myself.”

Leary is optimistic about her performance at the upcoming World Championships in Singapore, slated for next month. “100 per cent, my tanks will be going (in Singapore). I’ll be going,” she assured her supporters, inspiring cheers from the crowd, including her father, Russ.

Expressing her satisfaction with her training, she credited her coach, John Bell, for her progression, noting, “He’s an amazing coach – look how far he’s got me; it’s amazing.”

As she prepares for this crucial competition, Leary’s dedication and passion for her sport shine through, making her one to watch as she aims to achieve her goal of setting a new world record.
