Detectives executed a search warrant in Dandenong today, seizing several mobile phones in connection to an ongoing investigation into a tragic arson incident. While no arrests have been made, authorities intend to conduct forensic analyses on the devices. This raid follows multiple anonymous tips regarding the fire, which police believe was a deliberate attack linked to the illicit tobacco trade; however, they suspect that it targeted the wrong residence.

The incident in question occurred early on January 16 in Truganina, where 27-year-old Katie Tangey was housesitting for her brother. Tragically, she lost her life along with the family’s golden retriever when flames engulfed the three-storey townhouse. Initial investigations revealed that a dark-coloured vehicle, resembling a BMW X3 or X5, was seen outside the home moments before the fire, as per CCTV footage. Witness accounts pointed to two individuals exiting this vehicle, one appearing to carry a jerry can.

Emergency services received a distress call from Tangey, who reported that the house was ablaze. Despite her efforts, she was unable to escape, and the townhouse was ultimately destroyed. Investigators publicly affirmed that Tangey was entirely innocent in this matter, with plans for a significant investigation continuing to identify those responsible and clarify the motives behind the attack.

Detective Inspector Chris Murray has urged anyone with information to come forward, declaring the investigation solvable and expressing determination to bring those involved to justice. The police reiterated their commitment to securing closure for Tangey’s grieving family, who are mourning the loss of a young woman with a promising future ahead of her.
