Foreign Minister Penny Wong has confirmed that the Australian government has contacted 9News correspondent Lauren Tomasi after she was struck by a rubber bullet during her reporting on protests in Los Angeles. The incident, which occurred at close range and was captured on video, has garnered international attention. Tomasi reported feeling “sore, but okay,” stating that she and her cameraman were not seriously injured.
Speaking to Today, Wong described the event as a “really awful” moment and emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting Tomasi. She noted that diplomatic communications have been initiated through the consulate general in Los Angeles to offer any necessary assistance. Wong reiterated Australia’s belief in the importance of a free press and the safety of journalists while they perform their duties.
Regarding possible discussions at the upcoming G7 summit in Canada, Wong indicated that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese would not disclose specifics of his agenda concerning the incident, although she assured that appropriate diplomatic actions had been taken.
Albanese condemned the incident, highlighting that Tomasi was clearly identifiable as a member of the media when she was shot. He expressed that such an occurrence is unacceptable, affirming the critical role of journalists. In response to the event, the Los Angeles Police Department has launched a formal investigation into the matter.
