As leaders prepare for the G7 summit in Canada, uncertainties remain regarding a crucial face-to-face meeting, primarily focused on defence and trade. Factors such as a scheduled military parade and civil unrest in Los Angeles threaten the president’s participation and overall agenda at the summit.

Deputy Nationals leader Kevin Hogan has underscored the necessity for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to secure a meeting with the president, labelling it “non-negotiable.” Hogan expressed that failure to arrange a physical meeting alongside the G7 would raise significant concerns. Nonetheless, Australian officials remain confident in their ability to schedule this crucial engagement.

Former Liberal senator and US ambassador Arthur Sinodinos has indicated that Albanese would likely approach tariff negotiations with caution, particularly regarding modifications to Australia’s biosecurity regulations concerning American beef imports.

In the backdrop of these discussions, the US has hinted at offering greater access to Australia’s critical minerals as a potential incentive for Australia to reduce tariffs on its exports. Additionally, there are calls for increased Australian defence spending, although Defence Minister Richard Marles clarified that the focus should be on capability rather than merely hitting a financial target. Marles emphasised the importance of ensuring Australia possesses the necessary resources to address current strategic challenges.

In summary, as the G7 summit approaches, the dynamics between Australia and the US appear pivotal, with expectations for productive discussions on both trade and defence.
