Phil Gould has expressed his views on Ezra Mam’s inclusion in the Queensland squad, describing the decision as "very forgiving" given Mam’s past off-field issues. Last year, the young Broncos player was involved in a drug-driving incident resulting in a nine-match suspension and a substantial fine from the NRL. Despite this, Mam has made a recent return to the field, delivering inconsistent performances for his team.

The 22-year-old has been called into the Maroons’ training camp, although his participation in the upcoming State of Origin match remains unlikely. This selection has sparked debate among fans and commentators alike, with Gould questioning the rationale behind it during a segment on Nine’s 100% Footy. He believes the emphasis should be on Mam’s eligibility rather than the choice of including him, suggesting the leniency shown to Mam is too forgiving, especially considering his record.

Gould noted, "People make mistakes, and I’m all for second chances… but this is very forgiving," underscoring that the decision seems more driven by necessity than merit. He remarked on the importance of moving forward while hoping Mam can contribute positively if given the chance with the Maroons.

Mam recently excelled in a match against the Titans but had struggled the previous week against Manly. He is expected to serve as a backup to regular halves Tom Dearden and Cameron Munster in the upcoming series. Former NSW captain Paul Gallen acknowledged the situation, conceding that there was little to contest regarding Mam’s eligibility after serving his penalties.

Maroons coach Billy Slater has defended the selection, stating that while opinions on the matter may vary, "everyone is entitled to their own opinion." As the controversy continues, fans and analysts remain divided on whether Mam’s past should overshadow his potential on the field.
