Mark Taylor, the former Australian cricket captain, recently honoured the late Shane Warne during the Big Freeze at the ‘G event, embracing Warne’s iconic wide-brimmed hat and slathering sunscreen on his nose and lips. This heartwarming tribute occurred prior to the AFL match between Melbourne and Collingwood on the King’s Birthday weekend.

Taylor, who was the last participant to slide into the frigid water, quipped that it was a fitting place for Warne to have batted, highlighting the former cricketer’s enduring legacy. Speaking to Channel Seven, he reflected on Warne’s impact at the ground, remarking, “He set this ground alight many times. It’s great to be here and support a great cause and honour my late, great mate Shane Warne.”

The event featured a star-studded lineup of participants, including Olympic swimmer Ariarne Titmus, Collingwood legend Peter Daicos, filmmaker Matt Nable, and Tour de France victor Cadel Evans, among others. Taylor expressed the importance of contributing to this meaningful cause, indicating a personal connection as he has known the Daniher family for years.

With deep gratitude, Taylor stated, “It’s nice to be able to help out in a small way.” The Big Freeze has become a hallmark event, aiming to raise awareness and funds for motor neurone disease (MND) research and support for those affected by the condition.

This year’s edition of Big Freeze at the ‘G was particularly poignant, as players from both teams formed a guard of honour for Neale Daniher, a notable figure in the fight against MND. The event not only celebrated the legacy of Shane Warne but also aimed to foster community spirit and solidarity in support of those battling serious illness.
