Australian Olympic gold medallist Mack Horton has publicly endorsed World Aquatics’ decision to prohibit athletes from competing in the Enhanced Games, asserting that it fails to set a positive precedent for future generations. Horton, who retired from competitive swimming in 2024, expressed his concerns regarding the implications of such events on the integrity of traditional sports. His comments follow the recent announcement that athletes like James Magnussen are barred from participating, alongside officials from these Enhanced Games.
Horton, who swam alongside Magnussen at the 2016 Olympics, conveyed his strong support for the ban, stating, “They’ve already divorced themselves from the sport by participating in the Enhanced Games.” He believes that these athletes are opting out of conventional sporting values and encourages them to “do your own thing” instead of competing within traditional frameworks. He also reflected on whether he would have participated in the Enhanced Games during his prime, jesting, “No, because I don’t want my jaw to look like a human growth hormone.” Horton added that a key aspect of athletics is to inspire younger generations and maintain a good role model image, which he believes the Enhanced Games do not promote.
Conversely, fellow Australian swimmer Kyle Chalmers chose not to engage in any hostility regarding the issue. He expressed support for Magnussen as a friend but raised valid concerns about the financial aspects of swimming, acknowledging that prize money is scarce in traditional competitions. Chalmers noted the enticing $500,000 prize per event at the Las Vegas Enhanced Games happening in May 2024, and sympathised with swimmers seeking better financial opportunities, stating, “I’m not going to be a person that slams swimmers for wanting to go across and make some money.”
As the debate unfolds, Horton’s advocacy for maintaining the integrity of sport and nurturing future talent contrasts with Chalmers’ recognition of the financial challenges athletes face. The discourse highlights differing perspectives in the sporting community about how to navigate modern challenges while preserving the essence of athletic competition.
