South Sydney’s five-eighth Cody Walker experienced another setback during his team’s significant loss to the Raiders on Sunday, sustaining a groin injury shortly after returning from a five-game absence. He left the game in the 57th minute, adding to the disappointment of a match that ended 36-12 in favour of the Raiders, who celebrated Josh Papalii’s landmark achievement of becoming their most capped player with 319 NRL appearances.

The match turned into a memorable occasion for Papalii, who scored two tries in the last ten minutes, showcasing his determination and skill on this special day for him and Raiders supporters. Meanwhile, Walker’s return was overshadowed by his injury, which prompted concerns given it was his first game back since Round 7.

Reporters noted Walker’s evident frustration as he exited the field, having summoned the medical staff for assistance before leaving the pitch. The game commenced with an early score from Rabbitohs’ Keaon Koloamatangi, setting a positive tone for Souths and boosting his hopes for a recall to the NSW State of Origin team. However, the Raiders suffered an injury setback of their own when rookie Savelio Tamale had to be taken off the field due to a knee issue in the 14th minute.

The Rabbitohs initially surged ahead, with Koloamatangi and Alex Johnston, the latter now closing in on Ken Irvine’s try record, contributing to the scoreline. By halftime, the Raiders were trailing 12-6, with young five-eighth Ethan Strange scoring just before the break.

The second half saw the Raiders dominate, scoring five unanswered tries and finishing the game strongly. Strange added to his tally early in the second half, and Zac Hosking extended their lead before Simi Sasagi scored following an impressive build-up involving a Jamal Fogarty kick and contributions from Sebastian Kris and Hudson Young.

In a remarkable finish, Papalii scored two close-range tries in succession, with the crowd erupting in celebration as he converted the second try himself, further cementing his legacy within the club. Additionally, Corey Horsburgh showcased his prowess, amassing significant run metres and tackles in a solid performance, highlighting his commitment to regain a Queensland jersey.

Overall, the match was a mixed bag for Souths and the Raiders, with injuries affecting both teams, but the day ultimately belonged to Papalii and his record-setting achievements.
