Brad Fittler has noted that the process of appointing a new head coach for the Kangaroos is still in its infancy following Mal Meninga’s recent resignation to join the Perth Bears. As discussions regarding potential candidates intensify, names such as Cameron Smith and Wayne Bennett have emerged, but Fittler appears to be the leading contender for the role.
During an appearance on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, Fittler urged patience and made it clear that substantive talks are yet to begin, as the coaching position has only been vacant for four days. He indicated that the team is currently focused on preparations for the Kangaroos’ first tour in 22 years and the complexities involved in transitioning to a new coach.
Fittler, who recently coached the Prime Minister’s XIII, reflected on his coaching journey since stepping down from State of Origin duties last year. When asked by Andrew Johns about the possibility of collaborating with Cameron Smith for the upcoming Ashes series, Fittler acknowledged the potential but reiterated that discussions are still preliminary.
Billy Slater, currently coaching the Queensland side, expressed his belief that both Fittler and Smith would excel as the Kangaroos’ head coach. He emphasised the need for genuine passion and commitment from whoever takes on the role, highlighting the honour that comes with coaching the national team.
As the search continues, the rugby league community awaits further developments while acknowledging the significance of the head coach position for Australia’s national squad.
