The Sydney Swans have resumed their winning ways, successfully breaking a two-match losing streak by defeating the Richmond Tigers at the MCG with a score of 11.14 (80) to 4.12 (36). Prior to this match, the Swans faced heavy defeats, suffering a 53-point loss to the Demons and a staggering 90-point defeat at the hands of Adelaide.
Despite holding a six-point lead after the first quarter, Richmond couldn’t maintain their momentum as the Swans found their rhythm, dominating each quarter thereafter.
In a notable individual performance, forward James Jordon was a standout for the Swans, contributing three goals, while Nick Blakey topped the disposal charts with 34 touches. Following the demoralising loss to Adelaide, the Swans’ leadership took decisive action, instructing players to participate in a rigorous Sunday morning beach session at Clovelly, which included traditional exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, and a refreshing swim. This session took place after the team returned to the SCG around midnight, with coach Dean Cox joining the players for the early workout.
In his post-match comments, Cox acknowledged the less-than-perfect nature of the performance but commended his players for their efforts and commitment. “The first quarter was a little bit rusty, and nerves were there about how we were going to get it done, but they rallied,” he noted, emphasising the importance of the win despite its scrappy execution.
This victory not only ends a difficult stretch for the Swans but also serves as a timely confidence booster as they look to build on this achievement in upcoming matches.
