Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler has received a warning from the NRL regarding his comments about match officials following a controversial decision during a match. Hasler expressed frustration after a try by hooker Sam Verrills was denied. The Bunker ruled that Verrills had obstructed Melbourne’s defence by touching Tino Fa’asuamaleaui’s leg, leading to the no-try call.

In his post-match comments, Hasler was measured but did express his belief that the decision was incorrect, stating, “Kasey got it wrong, again.” He further questioned the ruling that Fa’asuamaleaui was allowed to hold his ground during the play and claimed that there had been confusion over obstruction rules.

The NRL responded with a statement confirming that Hasler is on his final warning for what they deemed direct and targeted criticism of match officials. This warning concerns his remarks following Round 13 of the NRL Telstra Premiership, as well as previous comments about officiating. The governing body reminded Hasler of his responsibilities under the NRL Rules and Code of Conduct and the importance of fostering respect for match officials, citing that negative comments can deter people from becoming referees in the sport.

Hasler’s situation is not isolated, as Cowboys coach Todd Payten received a similar warning earlier this season for his remarks about officiating. The NRL is keen to maintain a level of respect and professionalism towards referees, who play a crucial role in the integrity and smooth operation of the game.
