Queensland rugby league icon Billy Moore has urged the Maroons’ forwards to rise to the occasion against New South Wales in the upcoming second State of Origin match, emphasising the need for them to establish a strong platform for the team’s playmakers. Moore, renowned for inspiring the legendary “QUEENSLANDERRRR” chant during the 1995 series, reflects on the team’s current predicament, trailing 0-1 after a disappointing loss at Suncorp Stadium.

Criticism has swirled around seasoned players like Daly Cherry-Evans, Harry Grant, and Cameron Munster following the defeat. However, Moore advocates for a focus on the forward pack, noting that they failed to perform adequately in the first match. He asserts, “A big dose of honesty” is required, as the team’s middle players need to step up to provide crucial support for the halves, who cannot function optimally when on the back foot.

Moore expresses confidence in the selected players from the first game, deeming them capable of delivering a solid performance in the next match. He stresses the importance of the forwards claiming control of the middle, as was evident in their prior lacklustre showing. He further highlights Corey Horsburgh’s potential inclusion, depending on his performance against South Sydney, likening the upcoming clash to a final chance for the prop.

A compelling consideration for the selectors is rising star Ezra Mam of the Brisbane Broncos. Moore believes Mam could make a case for selection should he excel in the upcoming match against Gold Coast. After serving a ban earlier in the season, Mam has returned to demonstrate his capabilities, making him a strong candidate for the squad.

Moore acknowledges the challenge of integrating Mam, as the talented five-eighth would likely compete with established players like Munster for a spot. The possibility of dropping Cherry-Evans mid-series is another contentious point, as it would represent a significant shake-up. Should Mam be included, it would likely be at the expense of fullback Kalyn Ponga or bench utility Tom Dearden.

With Queensland historically struggling to maintain an effective scoring ability against NSW, Mam’s inclusion could inject some much-needed flair into their attacking strategy. As anticipation builds for the second Origin showdown in Perth on June 18, Moore’s advocacy for the forwards and consideration of fresh talent may prove pivotal in shifting the series momentum in Queensland’s favour. Coach Billy Slater is expected to name the team following the Monday clash between the Bulldogs and Eels.
