Former Wallabies captain Michael Hooper has revealed his reasons for declining a farewell match against the British and Irish Lions, scheduled for July 12 at Adelaide Oval. Despite being a prime target for Rugby Australia’s AUNZ Invitational XV, Hooper, now 33, chose to step back after completing an eight-game stint with Japan’s Toyota Verblitz.
Reflecting on his rugby experiences, Hooper stated, “I’ve played the Lions before,” emphasising that the opposition would soon transition into a competitive Test series, making it a challenging environment for anyone who is not fully fit and match-ready. He acknowledged that he hadn’t been in a Test context for several weeks and felt that it wouldn’t be fair to himself or his potential teammates.
He shared light-hearted memories from his time in Japan, typifying it with enjoyment over the local culture, including Asahi beers and rice balls from convenience stores, which contributed to his decision to remain there. “I’ve had a good time in Japan,” he noted, considering the implications of training on his own in Australia, possibly even playing for Manly, versus facing seasoned Lions players in a hastily assembled team.
Hooper reflected on his evolving perspective; while he might have eagerly accepted such an opportunity in his younger days, his current outlook as a soon-to-be 34-year-old made it clear that playing in what he deemed a ‘non-fairytale ending’ was not appealing. Ultimately, he found the decision straightforward.
Since his last appearance for the Wallabies in 2023, Hooper has faced various challenges, including being cut from the team by Eddie Jones prior to the Rugby World Cup and later attempting to compete in sevens for Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a plan thwarted by injuries.
In related news, Rob Valetini, the reigning John Eales Medallist, is contemplating taking a sabbatical to play club rugby in France rather than returning to the Brumbies next season. He expressed a desire for a fresh experience, saying, “It would be awesome to play in the Top 14,” while also looking forward to the opportunity to explore new cities and cultures. Additionally, players like Nic White (Western Force), Billy Pollard (Brumbies), and Joey Walton (Waratahs) have recently recommitted to their current clubs.
