Melbourne Victory has expressed deep concerns regarding the “unacceptable” and “disproportionate” police response during the recent A-League grand final. The match, which drew a significant crowd, saw heightened police presence following incidents involving flares lit by some fans. In an effort to manage the situation, several police stations temporarily closed, resulting in a large deployment of officers around the area, particularly on Swan Street, as thousands of fans headed to AAMI Park.
The event, while initially meant to be a celebration of football, turned chaotic, leading to four penalty notices for possessing lit fireworks, one for riotous behaviour, and numerous evictions. In a message to supporters, Melbourne Victory chairman John Dovaston described the response from law enforcement as overwhelming and inappropriate, stating that it fostered fear among families and fans rather than a sense of excitement associated with the sport.
Dovaston highlighted that the extensive police presence overshadowed the majority of peaceful attendees, noting that the narrative surrounding the incident shifted focus to the small number of disruptive individuals instead of the collective goodwill of the crowd. He asserted that there is a crucial distinction between ensuring safety and instilling fear, alleging that the latter was the outcome of the police approach on the night.
The club is now calling for long-term changes, urging collaboration with the Victorian Government, Victoria Police, and various football organisations to prevent similar occurrences in the future and to ultimately reshape the narrative around football events in Australia.
In response, Victoria Police affirmed their disappointment over the behaviour exhibited by certain fans, which included throwing flares, leading to injuries among officers. Such actions detracted from what should have been a vibrant event, marking a significant occasion in Melbourne’s soccer calendar, especially since it was a sell-out match featuring fierce rivals Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City. The attendance reached nearly 30,000 as Melbourne City emerged victorious, securing their second championship title.
Overall, Melbourne Victory is pressing for a reassessment of the police strategy at sporting events to ensure a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all fans, far removed from the fear and disorder witnessed during the grand final.
