The Aurora Australis, commonly known as the southern lights, graced the skies over parts of southern and eastern Australia last night, coinciding with the onset of winter. The Australian Space Weather Alert System had previously issued a warning regarding a geomagnetic storm, setting the stage for this spectacular display.
While the auroras were breathtaking, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) cautioned sky enthusiasts that this might be an isolated event. They mentioned the potential for further G3-grade geomagnetic activities throughout the day; however, these conditions are expected to diminish by the evening, thereby lessening the chances of experiencing additional aurora displays later in the night.
For those who witnessed the phenomenon, stunning photographs capture the beauty of this natural light show, showcasing the enchanting dance of colours against the night sky.
