A concerning social media trend known as “Run It Straight” has emerged, resulting in severe consequences. The activity involves participants charging towards each other at full speed to attempt a knockout, causing alarm among concussion experts. This alarming practice has sparked significant backlash from health professionals who express concerns over its potential to cause serious injuries.

Tragically, the trend resulted in the death of teenager Ryan Satterthwaite during a spontaneous backyard game in New Zealand. Expert Dr Adrian Cohen, the founder of Headsafe, labelled the activity a “stupid idea” and voiced strong disapproval, stating that it promotes harm and recklessness. He suggested that a “ministry of common sense” be established to eliminate such dangerous activities from society.

Calls have been made for prominent athletes, such as All Blacks and league players, to denounce this activity openly. Ryan’s uncle, Peter, expressed hope that high-profile figures would address and condemn the trend. Despite the evident risks, Run It Straight currently operates without any specific regulatory oversight, raising questions about accountability and safety measures.

New South Wales Sports Minister Steve Kamper remarked that the activity does not fall under any formal sporting regulations and acknowledged that it is neither recognised as a sport nor a combat sport, complicating the possibility of implementing legislation against it. Kieren Perkins, CEO of the Australian Sports Commission, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the activity’s dangerous nature and its misalignment with national safety guidelines aimed at protecting individuals from concussions and other brain injuries.

While Run It Straight claims to adhere to organised conditions during its events, it cautions against practices that deviate from its regulations. Nevertheless, the trend’s appeal continues to raise concerns about the safety of participants, especially among youths influenced by viral challenges on social media. Experts and advocates are calling for increased awareness and responsibility to prevent further tragedies linked to such reckless activities.
