Andrew Johns has raised questions about Lachlan Galvin’s long-term position with the Canterbury Bulldogs, suggesting a possible transition to the forwards, particularly as a ball-playing lock. The 19-year-old, who recently signed with the Bulldogs, is expected to join the starting lineup in the coming weeks, likely replacing halfback Toby Sexton.

Johns, regarded as one of the best halfbacks in rugby league history, doesn’t envision Galvin remaining in the halfback position for long. He believes that as Galvin matures physically—specifically by adding around 10 kilograms—he could excel in the middle of the field. According to Johns, Galvin resembles a running five-eighth, akin to Matt Burton, and he sees a future for him where he and Mitch Woods could be the Bulldogs’ primary playmakers in a few years.

While Galvin’s journey began at the Wests Tigers, where he demonstrated his versatility—playing in various roles from the halves to fullback and back row—former Australian representative Cameron Smith echoed Johns’ sentiments. Smith pointed out the need for Galvin to bulk up to meet the demands of a lock position but acknowledged his potential for greatness if he can adapt.

Maroons coach Billy Slater noted that Galvin, although not a conventional halfback, showcased his involvement on the field throughout his time at the Tigers. Slater commented on Galvin’s desire for the ball and his proactive playing style, which is vital for effective game management.

As the Bulldogs have already started incorporating smaller forwards, such as Kurt Mann and Bailey Hayward, into their game strategy, rugby league legend Brad Fittler believes Galvin’s addition could signify a shift in the Bulldogs’ approach and potentially influence the game overall. He suggested that if Galvin and Burton, who have different kicking styles, work together, it might redefine traditional positional play, possibly positioning a halfback behind the line, altering the dynamics of their gameplay.

In summary, while Galvin’s initial placement may be at halfback, both Johns and other commentators foresee him evolving into a pivotal player in the forwards, indicating that his versatility could be a game-changer for Canterbury and the broader rugby league landscape.
