The manager of the Laos backpackers hostel linked to the methanol poisoning deaths of six individuals, including Melbourne teenagers Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones, has launched a luxury resort. Known as Pikachu, the former manager of Nana Backpacker confirmed his association with the new 4-star hotel situated in Vang Vieng’s bustling party district. Although he stated the resort would officially open in a few months, it appears that accommodations are already available for booking.
This development comes as a significant disappointment for the families of the victims, who are seeking justice. In a joint statement, the parents of Holly and Bianca expressed their outrage over this news, lamenting their lack of communication from the Australian government. They feel sidelined in the ongoing investigation.
Laotian police have reportedly recommended charges against 13 individuals associated with Nana Backpacker and a local distillery, with the decision to proceed resting with local prosecutors. Pikachu remarked on the investigation’s challenges, suggesting that it reflects poorly on the local authorities. He insisted that he and his staff had acted appropriately, stating that many employees from the hostel have since returned home and are currently not working.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) stated that its officials are in ongoing discussions with Laotian authorities to ensure a thorough investigation. A spokesperson confirmed the government’s commitment to supporting Holly and Bianca’s families, while also working to prevent future tragedies of this nature. The families await justice, feeling that the situation continues to be mishandled.
