In an extraordinary turn of events during a Super Rugby match in Hamilton, the Chiefs achieved a record-breaking 85-7 victory against Moana Pasifika, showcasing an unrivalled display of dominance. Following a recent standout individual performance from All Blacks star Ardie Savea, he found himself largely sidelined as the Chiefs obliterated their opponents, scoring an astounding 13 tries.

The Chiefs’ win marked the biggest margin in the franchise’s history, eclipsing their prior record of a 56-point victory against the same team in the previous year. This latest win also saw the Chiefs achieve their highest-ever points total and number of tries in a match. Previously, their top score was set during a thrilling 2010 clash in Johannesburg.

The match unfolded at FMG Stadium Waikato, witnessed by a lively crowd of 17,666, who saw the Chiefs take complete control from the outset, leading 31-0 by halftime. The Chiefs dominated possession with 76% and made significant advances with 415 metres travelled compared to Moana’s 33. The statistics reflected a commanding performance, highlighting the Chiefs’ efficiency and tactical superiority.

Winger Leroy Carter and halfback Cortez Ratima shone brightly, each scoring hat-tricks that underlined the Chiefs’ attacking prowess. Even with disruptions, including a couple of yellow cards for Moana, the Chiefs maintained their relentless offensive flow. Standout players like Wallace Sititi excelled in their physical play, while fullback Shaun Stevenson electrified the field with his speed and agility.

Despite Moana Pasifika fighting back with a try from Savea in the second half, it was too little, too late, as the Chiefs continued to pour on the pressure. Coach Clayton McMillan enjoyed watching Moana’s recent performances, which he felt kept his team alert and ready.

As the Chiefs look ahead to the final round of the competition, they sit proudly at the top of the Super Rugby Pacific ladder, demonstrating both a high level of skill and an unyielding spirit as they aim for a successful finish to the season.
