A significant weather alert has been issued for the south-eastern regions of Australia, as the most ferocious cold front of the year is set to hit. This system consists of two cold fronts that will pass through South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales over the coming days, bringing with them an array of severe weather including strong winds, hazardous coastal conditions, rain, and snow.

The initial cold front is currently moving from Tasmania towards southern South Australia and western Victoria, expected to arrive on Saturday afternoon. This front is likely to generate showers along with isolated thunderstorms. In elevated areas of Victoria, residents should prepare for the possibility of damaging wind gusts this evening as the front weakens.

The second cold front poses a more considerable threat, especially in Adelaide on Sunday night, when it will deliver a substantial band of rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Wind gusts are anticipated to reach speeds of 80 to 100 km/h across parts of South Australia and western Victoria by Sunday evening, with these fierce conditions extending into the rest of Victoria and New South Wales on Monday and Tuesday.

As the cold air sweeps through on Tuesday, expect snow in elevated territories, signalling the arrival of the coldest temperatures of the season. Rainfall amounts could reach moderate totals of 5-15mm along southern coastal areas through Tuesday evening, while Tasmania and parts of Victoria and south-eastern New South Wales may see heavier accumulations.

The Bureau of Meteorology has called for vigilance among residents in affected areas, urging them to stay updated with weather warnings. Although no current warnings have been issued, meteorologists are likely to announce warnings for damaging and destructive wind gusts shortly. These forecasts cover extensive regions, primarily south-eastern South Australia, Victoria, and south-eastern New South Wales.

The recent dry autumn has created a heightened risk for fallen trees and branches due to weakened vegetation. Coastal areas are also expected to face challenges; wave heights may surpass 8-10 metres from Sunday into Monday, resulting in dangerous conditions across the South Australian coast from Port Lincoln to Victor Harbour. Similar large swells are projected for Victoria’s south-western coast as they move towards the east coast by Tuesday.

Overall, conditions are anticipated to improve by the middle of the week, but until then, residents should remain cautious and prepared for potential disruptions.
