Hudson Young, once viewed as a scapegoat for the NSW Blues, is now determined to establish his place in the State of Origin setup. The hard-hitting Raiders player made his debut in the 2023 series, participating in the first two matches, both of which ended in defeat for the Blues, before being omitted for the final game.
His previous selection came as a bench player in last year’s series, where NSW suffered a heavy loss after being reduced to 12 men due to Joseph Suaalii’s red card. Despite the challenging circumstances, Young was again dropped from the squad. On the brink of selection for this year’s Origin opener, Raiders coach Ricky Stuart voiced his frustrations regarding Young’s inconsistent selection, advocating for his inclusion as the top back-rower in the competition.
Shortly after Stuart’s remarks, Young was announced as a squad member for the first game in Brisbane. The 26-year-old expressed his excitement at the call-up but acknowledged the challenges ahead. Young remarked, “It was surreal,” highlighting the immense talent within the squad and the importance of remaining focused. He aspires to solidify his role in the team, stating, “What I want to do is cement myself in this team and be the best teammate… I don’t mind what’s happened in previous years.”
This season, Young’s form has been impressive, scoring nine tries in 11 games, contributing to Canberra’s successful push into the NRL’s top four. Despite his strong performance, doubt lingered regarding his selection for Origin, especially with numerous quality players available for coach Laurie Daley.
Young’s recent experiences, including earning a spot on the Kangaroos and winning a Pacific Championship, have infused him with confidence. “Being in there with world-class players… it’s something I have latched onto,” he reflected. His versatile gameplay was noted during his time with the Aussie team, where he adapted to a middle forward role—a shift that Andrew Johns has recommended for Young in the Origin setup.
As he prepares for the 2025 Origin opener, Young is ready to embrace whatever role is asked of him, highlighting the fluidity required of back-rowers. The anticipated match in Brisbane next Wednesday marks a significant moment for Young, who is eager to contribute to his state’s success and solidify his legacy within the team.
