Gary Lineker, the renowned former England footballer and BBC presenter, will conclude his role at the BBC following backlash over his Instagram post concerning Zionism. The 64-year-old, who is the highest-paid presenter for the British broadcaster, earning over $2.6 million annually, was initially set to remain with the network for covering events like the upcoming men’s World Cup after this season’s “Match of the Day”. However, the BBC announced that Lineker would entirely step down after next weekend’s episode. This decision was prompted by his repost of a story from the Palestine Lobby with a rat image, a symbol historically used in antisemitic propaganda.

BBC director-general Tim Davie stated that Lineker recognised his error and would step back from presenting. Lineker apologised for his actions, indicating he had shared the material without knowledge of its offensive nature. He promptly deleted the post upon realisation and expressed a commitment against sharing anything antisemitic.

Davie previously detailed the need for BBC presenters to exemplify the organisation’s values, noting that mistakes can be damaging. Lineker reflected on his long-standing connection to football and his work with the BBC, reiterating his opposition to antisemitism and emphasising his unexpected decision to step down. In an Instagram video, he described his actions as a “genuine mistake”.

Lineker’s political comments, particularly concerning the BBC’s impartiality guidelines, have sparked tensions with the network. He faced a temporary suspension in March for criticising the Conservative government’s asylum policy, which led to revised social media policies for high-profile presenters. Earlier, he signed a letter urging the BBC to air a documentary about Gaza that was withdrawn over controversy surrounding its narrator.

Recently, Lineker condemned the conduct of Israel in the Gaza conflict, asserting the complicity of silence on the issue. His departure has provoked mixed reactions; while some, like the Campaign Against Antisemitism, welcomed it as a move against perceived bias in the BBC, others argue that his outspokenness has endeared him to many as a prominent figure in British media.

Lineker, one of England’s most celebrated players, transitioned into a beloved broadcasting personality since 1999, amassing millions of followers across social media platforms. His resignation marks the end of an era in BBC sports coverage, with Davie acknowledging Lineker’s substantial influence and contributions over two decades.
