Mitchell Moses is gearing up for the upcoming State of Origin series with excitement about the new challenge of playing alongside Nathan Cleary in the halves. Until recently, Moses had never been selected for an Origin opener, but he received the call from NSW coach Laurie Daley, which marks a significant step in his career following a tumultuous year. His journey included initially missing out on the first game last year but later stepping in to guide the Blues to a 2-1 series victory.
Now looking ahead, Moses will wear the No.6 jersey in the first match against Queensland. Although last year’s triumph was notable, he acknowledges it won’t define his Origin career. “I’m excited to play in a game one; hopefully, I can do a job for the team,” he expressed, highlighting the importance of moving on from past successes as they prepare for the new series.
The combination of Moses and Cleary raises some questions due to both players being highly involved in their club roles. However, Moses seems prepared to allow Cleary, the established seven, to take charge while he optimises his opportunities. He recalls a previous experience at the Wests Tigers and is keen to learn from Cleary, whom he admires for his competitive spirit. “To play with a player of his calibre is exciting. He’s shown his ability to compete on every play throughout his career,” Moses stated.
In terms of coordination on the field, Moses noted that his experience with Parramatta teammate Dylan Brown, where both share ball time, suggests he won’t struggle with giving cleary space. Moses sees their dynamic as beneficial and is optimistic about the teamwork that will come together in Origin.
The supportive environment behind him consists of a strong forward pack, with players like Payne Haas, Spencer Leniu, and Isaah Yeo. He acknowledges their talent, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunities they will create during matches.
As they prepare to face Queensland at Suncorp Stadium on May 28, Moses looks to establish connections with Cleary and ensure that the team functions cohesively during this fierce rivalry. With a solid blend of talent and experience, he is ready to embrace the upcoming challenge of the State of Origin series.
