Queensland coach Billy Slater has unveiled a fresh line-up for game one of the State of Origin series, highlighting the inclusion of the Sydney Roosters’ rookie, Robert Toia, alongside other debutants Beau Fermor and Trent Loiero. Toia, a 20-year-old centre born in Auckland, has made a significant impact since his NRL debut earlier this season and is now set to bolster the Maroons’ backline.
The clash will take place at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium next Wednesday. Toia’s selection follows earlier discussions by state selector Darren Locker, who had tipped him as a potential bolter. Slater’s decision to include Toia has necessitated a reshuffle within the backline after veteran Murray Taulgai was sidelined due to injury. In this adjustment, experienced player Valentine Holmes will shift to a wing position.
In addition to Toia, Fermor and Loiero have earned their spots after demonstrating strong performances in their respective clubs, the Gold Coast Titans and Melbourne Storm. Kalyn Ponga has secured the fullback position despite the Newcastle Knights having a rough stretch of form recently, while Harry Grant continues as hooker even after playing in a losing match for Melbourne.
Patrick Carrigan, who sustained a serious mouth injury in his last game that may require surgical attention, will still join the line-up as lock. Slater is scheduled to address the media at 9:30 AM AEST ahead of the match.
The full team for the Maroons comprises:
1. Kalyn Ponga
