Andrew Johns has dismissed suggestions that Cameron Munster could switch to fullback for the upcoming State of Origin series, calling the idea “ridiculous.” Munster, who is widely regarded as one of the top five-eighths in modern rugby league, began his NRL career in the fullback position but has not played there for several years.

The discussion around this position change arose when Ben Hunt, currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, speculated on a radio show about potential lineup adjustments for Queensland, suggesting that coach Billy Slater might consider putting Kalyn Ponga on the bench. However, Johns quickly rebutted the idea, stating that one position should not be weakened to boost another.

On the show “Immortal Behaviour,” Johns remarked, “This notion is as absurd as shifting Kalyn Ponga to five-eighth in club football. You can’t compromise one role to enhance another when Munster hasn’t played fullback in ages. Moreover, the fitness demands differ significantly, including increased running and the responsibility of organising the defensive line.” He expressed certainty that a transition for Munster would not occur.

As the May 28 match at Suncorp Stadium approaches, Queensland’s selectors face critical choices, particularly with Hunt’s absence and uncertainties surrounding hooker Harry Grant. In addition, Johns highlighted another pressing selection issue regarding the team’s veteran players.

He specifically noted the dilemma concerning Tom Dearden and Daly Cherry-Evans in the wake of Hunt’s injury. The decision looms whether to place Cherry-Evans on the bench as the 14th player while starting Dearden at halfback. Johns pointed out the need to think about the future of the halves, as Cherry-Evans, aged 36, is nearing the end of his career and Munster, at 30, also falls into the older category. In contrast, Dearden has exhibited outstanding form at his club and has gained significant experience through four Origin appearances.

Johns remarked on Cherry-Evans’ recent performance inconsistency, noting that his club, Manly, has recorded only one victory in five games since he announced his retirement. With both NSW and Queensland teams set to be announced after round 11, the coaching staff must carefully consider how best to configure their lineups for the upcoming contests.
