In an unusual turn of events in outback Queensland, a young man identified as Caleb Dixon turned himself in after allegedly robbing the Toobeah Hotel. Following his actions, the 19-year-old cowboy expressed remorse and even enjoyed a drink with the hotel owner, who he had previously stolen from.
Dixon is accused of raiding the pub’s till on Tuesday morning, managing to make away with alcohol, cigarettes, and cash valued at approximately $6,000. Feeling guilty after recognising himself in social media posts about the robbery, Dixon decided to come forward. He shared a schooner with the owner, Michael Offerdahl, five hours away from Brisbane, which showcased a surprising display of contrition.
In a video, Dixon admitted, “I had a few too many beers, honestly, it was just random. I shouldn’t have done it,” assuring that such behaviour was out of character for him. Alongside an accomplice, he was captured on CCTV entering the hotel using a crowbar, both wearing distinctive Akubra-style hats. The footage showed their staggering entry, indicative of their intoxicated state.
Offerdahl appreciated Dixon’s admission of guilt, remarking on the young man’s unexpected sense of accountability. He noted, “It was great to see some remorse,” and conveyed that Dixon explained they locked up before leaving, which seemed considerate, if not ironic, given the circumstances. Offerdahl described the incident as a poorly thought-out venture, stating, “The boys just didn’t have a plan. It was just really silly what they were obviously doing.”
Dixon has been charged and is scheduled to appear in court next month. Authorities are also keen to speak with his accomplice regarding the incident. While Dixon has promised to return the items taken, his actions continue to be a point of discussion among the local community.
