Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has adopted a unique approach to engage with US President Donald Trump, emphasising that typical diplomatic strategies do not apply to his administration. In an interview with Nine’s Today, Wong articulated her intent to prioritise Australia’s national interests in response to Trump’s policies and his global outlook. She noted that upon Trump’s election, she recognised the need for a distinct strategy.

Wong stated that her government will proceed cautiously, focusing on clearly defining Australia’s priorities while asserting its sovereignty in decision-making. She referred to the differing views of the Trump administration on America’s role globally and highlighted the importance of maintaining a consistent stance on Australia’s interests.

The government is currently in discussions regarding the aluminium and steel tariffs imposed on Australia, while Wong acknowledged that the suspension of tariffs between the US and China is a positive development. She asserted that tariffs are detrimental, adversely affecting workers worldwide and damaging the global economy.

In a broader context, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to visit Indonesia, marking his first international trip since being re-elected. Although he has not met with Trump since the 2024 US elections, he did receive a congratulatory call from the President following his victory. Wong hinted that further engagements with the US are anticipated in the near future, suggesting plans are in motion for Australian leaders to strengthen ties with the United States.

Wong concluded by underscoring the significance of Indonesia in regional relations, emphasising that it remains a pivotal nation for Australia.
