Australian supporters remain impatiently awaiting the return of Sam Kerr to the Matildas’ squad, as her name is once again missing for the upcoming match against Argentina later this month. The renowned striker has been recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in January 2024, which has derailed her return multiple times. Interim coach Tom Sermanni has expressed caution, stating that he will only deploy Kerr once she receives full medical clearance to compete at a club level.

Chelsea’s manager Sonia Bompastor has yet to feature Kerr in any matches this year, with the final fixture of the FA Women’s Cup scheduled for May 18 (AEST). Consequently, Kerr’s participation for the international window is off the cards, prompting hopes from the Matildas that she might be back in action for the July or November fixtures.

Kerr’s absence will be felt not only by fans but also on the pitch, as several other key players, including Mackenzie Arnold, Mary Fowler, and Tameka Yallop, are sidelined due to injuries. Additionally, vice-captain Ellie Carpenter and midfielder Katrina Gorry are unavailable for selection following personal leave granted by Football Australia.

On a brighter note for the national side, Amy Sayer has recovered from her own ACL injury and is back in the squad, while goalkeeper Jada Whyman has also returned after a lengthy absence due to injury. Morgan Aquino has been called up after an impressive stint in the USL Super League, and young talent Kahli Johnson earns her first senior call-up.

Sermanni remarked on the group’s progress during their recent series against the Korea Republic, highlighting the strong foundation they are building as they prepare for upcoming challenges. He praised the squad’s depth and their opportunity to refine their style of play and team cohesion ahead of next year’s Asian Cup.

The upcoming matches against Argentina are anticipated to be crucial, possibly marking the final games under Sermanni’s management, as there are indications that Joe Montemurro, currently the coach of Lyon, is a leading contender for the permanent role.

The squad named to face Argentina includes notable talents, reinforcing the Matildas’ commitment to fostering both experienced and emerging players in their ranks.
