Jacinta Nampijinpa Price’s recent decision to switch from the Nationals to contest the deputy Liberal leadership has not materialised, as she did not nominate for the role during a party meeting. Price had initially expressed her intention to run alongside Angus Taylor, who was vying for the Liberal leadership, but opted out following the leadership vote. Instead, Ted O’Brien was elected deputy leader, defeating Phil Thompson by a significant margin of 38 to 16 votes.

In her statement, Price explained her choice not to pursue the deputy position, noting her recognition as a newcomer to the party and expressing gratitude for the chance to consider the role. Her quick departure from the Nationals has sparked disappointment among its ranks, notably from leader David Littleproud and Queensland senator Matt Canavan, who accused her of prioritising her ambition over her constituents’ wishes.

Despite the disappointing leadership outcome, which saw Taylor lose to Sussan Ley, Price extended her congratulations to Ley and O’Brien. She affirmed her commitment to the Liberal Party and her intent to contribute to its revitalisation and strength. Price emphasised the need for unity within the Coalition, highlighting her determination to position it as a strong opposition to the Albanese Labor government and to present a viable alternative for voters in future elections.
