When ‘Producer Trav’ informed the Between Two Posts WhatsApp group about Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt joining Monday’s show, it caught me off guard. Schmidt has been extremely busy lately as both his and incoming coach Les Kiss’s futures were finalised. Following a Friday night at the Sydney Football Stadium witnessing the Reds narrowly defeat NSW, I made my way to Newcastle on Saturday to see the Wallaroos face the Black Ferns.

Traditionally, our group chats revolve around golf, misguided bets, and Morgs teasing Burkey, so I initially thought Trav was pulling our leg. However, there was Schmidt, in person at Nine studios in North Sydney. Having been involved in rugby broadcasting since 2008, Schmidt is now the sixth Wallabies coach I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing.

During my previous experiences interviewing other coaches, each one was generous with their time and insights, regardless of my inexperience at the time. This encounter marked my first chance to sit down with Schmidt in nearly a year; our last meeting had been at a St Augustine’s rugby lunch prior to the 2024 Wales series. That discussion was warmly received, especially following the disappointment of Australia’s exit from the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Now, Schmidt was back alongside Wallabies media representative Marty Cambridge, ready to engage in conversation. He had come prepared for possible questions and expressed his willingness to discuss anything. After warm greetings, we delved into the interview.

We began with inquiries about the injured players, Noah Lolesio and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii. Schmidt confirmed their recoveries were progressing well, easing concerns for both players and the Wallabies moving forward. He acknowledged the broader implications of player injuries, highlighting the emotional stakes and support from their families.

When probed about his selection process for the Wallabies, Schmidt stressed the importance of certain qualities and teamwork within Super Rugby players, emphasising how combinations and decision-making could influence squad selections. He clarified that while he plays a role in selections, he works closely with his coaching staff to navigate the complexities of team dynamics.

As we discussed the upcoming British and Irish Lions series, Schmidt reflected on the necessity of maintaining a strong sense of identity and performance style, irrespective of opponents. He emphasised that building confidence from Super Rugby performances would be foundational for success.

Schmidt concluded with a heartfelt message to rugby fans, appreciating their support and encouraging them to bring their enthusiasm to matches. He reassured them of the players’ commitment to delivering entertaining and competitive performances.

As the show transitioned to highlight the Reds’ winning try from the weekend, it became evident that Schmidt possesses a compelling blend of warmth and determination. Burkey captured the essence of Schmidt perfectly, remarking, "He’s the sort of bloke you just wouldn’t want to let down."
