The Wallabies are currently seeking a new assistant coach following Geoff Parling’s recruitment by Leicester Tigers as the replacement for Michael Cheika. Cheika has successfully led the Tigers to a second-place standing in the Premiership but will part ways with the club at the end of the season. Parling, a former lock for England and the British and Irish Lions, is set to exit his role with the Wallabies after the third Test against the Lions on August 2, while he has dedicated himself to Australia’s forwards alongside Laurie Fisher and Mike Cron.
Parling is committed to ensuring the Wallabies are prepared for the upcoming challenges, stating, “I have felt incredibly privileged to work with a number of great people in my time here.” He expressed gratitude to Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt for fostering a positive environment. Parling’s journey in Australia began in 2018 when he joined the Melbourne Rebels before transitioning into coaching. Reflecting on his time in Australia, he mentioned the privilege of becoming an Australian citizen after seven years, saying, “I am proud to call ourselves Australian citizens, and lucky to have lived in such a great community.”
Although Parling will leave his post, he remains focused on contributing to the team during the Lions series. Rugby Australia’s high performance director, Peter Horne, praised Parling’s significant impact on Australian rugby but recognised the opportunity at Leicester as beneficial for his family and career. Plans are already in motion to find Parling’s successor.
Retiring as a Leicester great with two Premiership titles and over 300 games to his name, Parling has expressed his enthusiasm for the journey ahead as he prepares to take on the Lions’ lineout led by captain Maro Itoje. He acknowledges the promising potential within Leicester’s squad, marking his move as a deliberate choice for his professional future.
As the Wallabies gear up for their upcoming matches, the transition period will be pivotal as Rugby Australia sharpens its focus on integrating new coaching talent. Parling’s legacy and contributions to Australian rugby will undoubtedly be remembered as the team moves forward.
