Sussan Ley has made history by becoming the first woman to lead the Liberal Party, emerging victorious over Angus Taylor in a party room vote held this morning. Ley, who previously served as deputy leader under Peter Dutton in the last parliamentary term, secured her position by obtaining 29 votes against Taylor’s 25, marking a significant win for the moderate faction within the party.
In a concurrent election for the deputy leadership, Ted O’Brien, the former shadow energy spokesperson and a prominent advocate of the Coalition’s nuclear energy strategy, triumphed over Phil Thompson with a decisive 38 votes to 16.
Both Ley and O’Brien are anticipated to address the media later today to discuss their visions for the party and upcoming initiatives.
