DOOM: The Dark Ages offers a fresh perspective on the iconic franchise, merging high-octane action with medieval elements set against a backdrop of ancient, sacred landscapes filled with towering cathedrals and visceral combat. As a prequel to 2016’s DOOM, this latest installment diverges from the franchise’s traditional pace, introducing an enthralling yet brutal narrative.

Though initially lacking in narrative depth, the story improves as gameplay progresses, showcasing the Slayer’s struggle against demonic forces while starting off under someone else’s control. The game fuses intense combat with a heavy metal aesthetic, culminating in a gripping experience, especially as players encounter thrilling twists near the end.

This entry allows players to wield a diverse array of weapons, each with unique secondary features. The Slayer is visually impactful, using a chainsaw as a shield and combating a variety of enemies, including the stand-out Komodo, a fast-moving demon equipped with a chainsaw staff. Fast-paced combat is a hallmark of the DOOM experience, and navigating the game’s difficulties can enhance enjoyment for different playstyles.

Exploration and environmental design are significant highlights, with levels featuring intricately detailed gothic castles, lush forests, and eerie labyrinths reminiscent of sci-fi classics. Fast-paced gameplay sometimes obscures the visual artistry, but standout levels encourage players to interact with the environment dynamically, including gravity-defying sequences that evoke memories of DOOM Eternal.

The upgrade system intricately rewards exploration and skill through collectible items found in secret areas, which players can use to enhance abilities and weapons. While the variety of enemies provides engaging combat, some critics feel the game could have benefitted from more unique boss encounters, as several major antagonists recur throughout the journey.

Despite its reliance on familiar gameplay mechanics, DOOM: The Dark Ages skillfully delivers a riotous experience with a vast single-player campaign, comprising 22 levels for players to conquer over approximately 30 hours of gameplay. However, it’s worth noting that while sound design captivates with aggressive audio elements, the metal soundtrack doesn’t always resonate with the series’ notable intensity.

Ultimately, DOOM: The Dark Ages successfully melds chaotic action with an intricate upgrade and combat system, despite some weaknesses in narrative pacing and musical accompaniment. While it may not be the pinnacle of the series, it certainly promises a thrilling experience for fans and newcomers alike. The game is set to release on May 15 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC at a retail price of $119.95, also available via Game Pass.
