Taylan May, the exiled rugby league player, has confidently stated that he is prepared to return to the field next week, rejecting any notion that he poses a risk to prospective NRL teams. The 23-year-old was dismissed by the Penrith Panthers nearly a year ago following several off-field controversies, including domestic violence charges, which were subsequently dropped in March.

Speaking with 9News’ Danny Weidler, May reflected on his challenging journey, including time spent in a rehabilitation clinic that he described as transformative. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family, particularly his wife and children, which helped him navigate his darkest moments. He candidly acknowledged having suicidal thoughts during this period but emphasised that the thought of leaving his family motivated him to seek change and improvement.

“Coming out of it, I feel like a new person, with a different mindset and beliefs,” May shared, emphasising his readiness to play again. He dismissed concerns about being a liability for any club, asserting, “there’s no risk, no way.” His ambition extends to playing alongside his brother, Terrell May, at the Wests Tigers—a dream he has openly discussed but which remains unconfirmed by the club.

While he hopes for the opportunity to partner with his brother, May remains open to playing for other teams if that doesn’t materialise. He highlighted the passion that such a collaboration would ignite within him: “Playing with him would light a bigger fire inside me.”

May is aware of the potential backlash he may face from the rugby league community due to his past, asserting that he understands and respects differing opinions about him. He stated, “You could be the nicest guy, but someone is still going to hate you,” indicating his acceptance of the criticism that might come his way.

As he eyes a return to the NRL, May believes he is now a better man, ready for a fresh start and eager to contribute positively on and off the field. His story serves as a reminder of resilience and the importance of support in overcoming personal challenges.
