Western Bulldogs’ forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is reportedly at a health retreat, aiming to regain control of both his life and football career. According to News Corp, the facility is located outside Victoria, and while the club is optimistic about his progress, a timeline for his return remains unspecified. Ugle-Hagan took indefinite leave from the team last month due to ongoing mental health challenges and behavioural issues off the field, and he hasn’t participated in any games for the Bulldogs so far in 2025.

The young player, who was picked first overall in the 2020 draft from the club’s next-generation academy, has been training separately from his teammates as he manages these personal issues. Veteran AFL journalist Sam Edmund described the situation as a significant step forward for Ugle-Hagan, suggesting that his decision to seek professional help indicates a proactive approach towards recovery.

Edmund noted, “It’s often darkest before the dawn,” implying that Ugle-Hagan’s choice could lead to favourable outcomes. He stressed that although there are several health benchmarks the AFL has set for Ugle-Hagan’s return, this initiative shows a positive direction, reflecting his commitment to improving himself and eventually rejoining the game.

Ugle-Hagan’s last appearance for the Bulldogs was in the 2024 elimination final against Hawthorn, marking a total of 67 games played for the club. The team’s hope is that this retreat and his dedication to seeking help will pave the way for his eventual comeback.
