Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has announced his intention to challenge David Littleproud for the party’s leadership, pledging to scrap the party’s net zero energy policy if elected. Canavan expressed dissatisfaction with the recent election, suggesting that Australians did not have a true choice during the polls held on May 3, referring to it as a “me too” election.
Despite the Nationals securing a strong performance in regional seats, Canavan pointed out the critical need for a change, citing that the party’s strategy of “turning down the volume” to assist the Liberal Party had failed. He stated, “We didn’t win government,” which has motivated his leadership bid as he believes the party must adopt a more radical approach to resonate with voters.
Canavan has a focus on representing regional Australia, emphasising the need to provide affordable energy solutions for households struggling with rising bills. He expressed concern that current leadership may not be conducive to the country’s best interests and highlighted a disconnect between the party’s campaign message and its proposed solutions, stating, “We were telling the country that things were really bad, but then we weren’t proposing to make any radical changes.”
In discussing his leadership aspirations, Canavan promised to amplify the voices of Australians who feel unheard, intending to be a stronger advocate for their needs. Furthermore, he expressed disappointment over Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price’s defection to the Liberal party, noting that while he has no personal grievances against her, he disapproved of what he perceived as disloyalty in her actions.
As the Nationals prepare for their leadership vote today, the Liberal Party is set to hold their own leadership contest, followed by the Greens later in the week. The outcome of these contests will shape the future direction of their respective parties amidst a shifting political landscape.
