Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, was recently elected as the first Pope from the United States in a swift conclave. His brother, John Prevost, who travelled from Chicago to Rome to join in the celebrations, noted that Leo appears “relaxed” and “at ease” in his new role as spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics. John shared a meal with the new pope and attended Sunday mass at the tomb of Saint Peter, confirming that Leo is aware of the significant responsibilities he now carries.

During his first public address from St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV called for peace in Ukraine and Gaza while urging the international community to prevent future wars. Addressing a crowd of approximately 100,000 people, he echoed the sentiment of “never again war,” a reference he regarded as vital amidst current global conflicts, which he described as a “third world war in pieces.” He expressed his deep sympathy for the suffering Ukrainian populace, appealing for a just and lasting peace.

In the past, while serving as a bishop in Peru at the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, then-Bishop Prevost had voiced strong criticism against Russia’s actions. This continues with his current remarks as Pope, wherein he reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and highlighted the need for humanitarian aid for civilians caught in the conflict.

On Sunday, coinciding with Mother’s Day in various countries, Leo also took a moment to wish all mothers, even those in heaven, a Happy Mother’s Day. His brother, John, indicated confidence in Leo’s ability to navigate the challenges ahead, believing he “knows what he’s doing.”
