Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope for a complete and temporary ceasefire with Russia, set to begin on Monday. His remarks follow US President Donald Trump’s urging for Ukraine to accept Russia’s proposal for direct talks in Turkey. While Ukraine and its European allies have called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire prior to any discussions, Russia has countered this by insisting on direct negotiations instead.

Zelenskyy plans to attend the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday. However, it remains uncertain if his attendance depends on the ceasefire being in place. In a statement on social media, Zelenskyy emphasised the urgent need for a ceasefire to facilitate diplomatic discussions, stating, “There is no point in prolonging the killings.” He awaits confirmation from Russia for a ceasefire starting Monday.

While Trump has vocalised support for Ukraine to engage in talks, he stressed the importance of determining the viability of any peace agreement. European leaders have recently issued a unified call for a truce, threatening stronger sanctions on Russia should it refuse to comply.

In a recent address, Putin indicated a willingness for negotiations but underlined the necessity for a ceasefire that would establish lasting peace rather than allow Ukraine to bolster its military capabilities. Zelenskyy reacted positively to the prospect of discussions, referring to it as a long-awaited sign from Russia to consider ending the conflict.

Despite these developments, doubts persist regarding the sincerity of Moscow’s intentions. French President Emmanuel Macron, expressing scepticism about the negotiations, argued that an unconditional ceasefire must precede talks. He warned that while Moscow appears to be seeking a resolution, it may still be looking to gain time.

Turkey has expressed readiness to facilitate the meeting in Istanbul, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan supporting the Russian proposal. Erdogan has communicated a belief that a critical moment has been reached in peace efforts.

Amidst these diplomatic endeavours, Russia resumed drone attacks in Ukraine after a claimed ceasefire, leading to accusations from both sides regarding violations. Ukraine’s air force reported the downing of numerous drones, while the Russian Defence Ministry claimed Ukraine breached its ceasefire over 14,000 times.

As tensions continue, it remains to be seen whether the forthcoming negotiations in Turkey will yield a tangible resolution to the ongoing conflict.
