The recent nuclear discussions between Iran and the United States have concluded, with both parties acknowledging the challenges faced during talks but expressing a commitment to continue negotiations. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described the discussions as “difficult but useful,” aimed at enhancing understanding of each side’s positions and exploring viable solutions to their differences.

Meanwhile, a senior official from the Trump administration offered a more optimistic view, noting that the direct and indirect discussions lasted over three hours and considered the outcomes encouraging. The dialogue focused on Iran’s nuclear program and the potential for alleviating sanctions. A consensus has been reached to advance further talks, although no specific date has been set for the next meeting, which will reportedly be announced by Oman, the mediator in this process.

While the resumption of such high-level talks marks a small step forward after years of stagnation, substantial progress seems elusive. Both nations have expressed a desire to resolve their disagreements through diplomatic channels. However, major hurdles remain, particularly Iran’s insistence on continuing uranium enrichment, which it claims is for peaceful purposes. Conversely, the U.S. views this as a “red line” that must not be crossed.

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the Middle East next week and has indicated that should Iran fail to reach a satisfactory agreement, military action against its nuclear facilities may be considered, potentially in collaboration with Israel.

Earlier, leading the Iranian delegation, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi highlighted the contradictory positions of the US, which complicate the negotiations. Iranian sources have labelled the discussions as “not genuine,” reiterating their firm stance on uranium enrichment as a non-negotiable point.

On the American side, US special envoy Steve Witkoff warned that unproductive talks may lead to a reevaluation of their approach. He underscored a firm US expectation of a complete halt to uranium enrichment activities in Iran.

Despite assertions from Iranian officials that their nuclear programme is intended for energy, concerns remain. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, has cautioned that Iran is closer than ever to acquiring nuclear weapon capability, likening the situation to a puzzle where the necessary components are present, and could eventually be assembled.

The implications of these ongoing dialogues are significant, with regional stability and international relations hanging in the balance as both sides navigate these complex discussions.
