Experts are actively investigating the landing site of a meteor that captivated residents early this morning at approximately 6am. Witnesses across Western Australia, from Kalgoorlie to Mandurah, reported seeing the stunning display in the sky.
Matt Woods from the Perth Observatory described the event as “one hell of a meteor,” adding that it was a delightful surprise for those celebrating Mother’s Day. Experts estimate that the meteor was approximately the size of a cricket ball to a basketball and travelled at an impressive speed ranging from 16 to 60 kilometres per second. According to Woods, the intense friction generated during its descent caused the meteor to melt, resulting in the beautiful green glow observed.
While scientists believe the meteor likely soared over the central wheatbelt region, the exact location of its landing remains uncertain. Researchers will dedicate efforts over the next few days to uncover where it may have touched down.
