The fishing industry in South Australia is facing a significant crisis due to a toxic algae outbreak that is severely impacting businesses along the coast. Tourism operators on Kangaroo Island are reportedly losing substantial amounts of income, while oyster farmers on the Yorke Peninsula have been compelled to quarantine their produce. Video evidence shows empty waters near Kangaroo Island, indicative of the declining fish population.

Sean Pearce, who runs a fishing charter business named Emu Bay Fishing, lamented that the current situation is the worst he has ever encountered, resulting in a halt to his operations as fisherfolk find themselves unable to catch anything. This predicament is not confined to fishing alone; onshore businesses reliant on fresh seafood are also feeling the strain. Vicky Pearce noted that they had to cancel charters and refund customers, leading to significant financial impacts. Local cafes and restaurants that traditionally serve fresh fish are struggling due to the lack of supply.

In Stansbury, oyster farmers face an additional challenge with both the algae bloom and a new toxin forcing the bay into quarantine. Farmer Steve Bowley expressed concerns about up to $500,000 worth of his stock being at risk. The situation is dire, and he warned that if it continues, the industry could face severe consequences.

As the future of South Australia’s fishing sector remains uncertain, operators are urging the government for assistance, including a reduction in licensing fees to alleviate the financial pressures. Vicky Pearce highlighted the urgent need for any form of support during this challenging period, as the industry grapples with economic hardships. The government has stated that it is monitoring the situation but has yet to announce any potential relief measures.
