Jarryd Hayne made a long-awaited return to rugby league on Sunday, playing for the Wentworthville Magpies in a hard-fought 22-14 victory against the Bulldogs in the Ron Massey Cup. The 37-year-old, who previously faced imprisonment due to sexual offences before having his convictions overturned, showcased his skills by assisting a try during the match.
This comeback follows Hayne’s participation in a Nines competition earlier in January. Initially intended to kick off the season with Wentworthville, he suffered a pre-season injury that set him back. Starting as five-eighth, Hayne played the full match but later acknowledged the toll it took on him, revealing he felt exhausted in the final moments.
“It was good for about 70 minutes and then the last 10 killed me,” Hayne remarked in a post-match interview with 9News Sydney, expressing his happiness at completing a full game. With a bye week upcoming, he anticipated taking time to recuperate. “I probably didn’t miss it until a year or two ago. It’s been a good break and I love my sport—I’m always doing something.”
Hayne, once one of Australia’s premier sporting figures—known for his remarkable contributions to State of Origin and two Dally M Medals with Parramatta—also had a stint in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. Reflecting on the presence of fans during the game, he displayed humility, insisting that his main focus was simply to enjoy the game with his teammates.
“I appreciate the support, but it’s about playing footy and having fun again,” he stated. Hayne noted that while he felt slightly out of form, including missing a few passes, he was pleased to contribute with a try assist and was grateful for the team’s victory. “It’s been a journey, but it was an enjoyable win and I’m glad to get the win. It’s life; we move forward.”
Overall, Hayne’s return to the field marks a significant chapter in his career, blending personal redemption with a passion for the sport he loves.
