Former North Sydney Bears and Queensland Origin player Ben Ikin has cautioned members of the new Perth-based NRL franchise to fully grasp the scale of the challenge they face. The Bears are set to return to the competition in 2027, with a Papua New Guinea team following in 2028. The new club will also host one annual match at North Sydney Oval, marking the revival of their colours and badge after 27 years.
Operating as a membership-based, not-for-profit entity, the Western Australian club’s board will consist of three West Australians, including a chairperson. The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) will support the franchise’s operational costs and ensure its financial stability for the first five years.
During an interview with Triple M Brisbane, Ikin reflected on the unique obstacles presented by establishing a team far from the sport’s traditional heartland. He emphasised the amount of groundwork necessary before the inaugural match, noting that even the Dolphins, who had an established infrastructure, faced significant challenges in their preparation.
Ikin advised, “Do not underestimate the size of the challenge they’ve got in front of them,” highlighting that developing a successful franchise involves navigating complex considerations, especially with many operations beginning anew.
He acknowledged the dedication of former Bears player Greg Florimo and others who kept the dream of reinstating the Bears alive, despite it often seeming unattainable. Ikin affirmed that while the Bears may not have technically ceased to exist, they were merely in limbo, sustained by loyal supporters.
He relayed the efforts made to creatively reintroduce the Bears’ legacy to elite rugby league, underscoring the history and passion behind the brand. “It’s official: the Bears will be back in the NRL,” he said, relishing the anticipation of their first away match in Sydney, despite the distance involved.
The road ahead for the new Perth franchise is expected to be demanding, but for Ikin and countless supporters, the prospect of reviving the Bears in the NRL is a momentous occasion worth anticipating.
