Port Adelaide’s football director, Chris Davies, acknowledges that Willie Rioli’s actions were inappropriate but expresses concern about the presence of “casual racism” in discussions surrounding events in the AFL. Rioli received a one-match suspension after allegations surfaced that he had threatened or spoken aggressively to players from opposing teams. This latest incident involved Western Bulldogs player Bailey Dale and occurred shortly after Rioli took a break from the sport due to severe racist abuse he received online.

While the allegations against Rioli had been circulating, they gained significant media attention following the Dale incident. Further allegations against him became public unexpectedly, prompting the AFL to impose a ban ahead of the upcoming Adelaide Showdown.

Davies remarked that the response to Rioli’s situation feels excessive, stressing that the media’s portrayal may carry undertones of racism. He believes that if the AFL intends to escalate scrutiny on player behaviour, it should also encourage broader conversations about how such incidents are reported.

The alleged threat against Dale, which occurred after the final siren, involved Rioli warning one of Dale’s teammates not to leave his hotel in Darwin due to connections Rioli has in the area. Power coach Ken Hinkley expressed concern that the AFL’s actions may complicate matters further. He believes the situation is delicate and raised questions about potential retaliatory behaviour from other players, suggesting that the AFL’s stance should prevent escalation.

Hinkley underscored that the club stands firmly behind Rioli but also acknowledges that he must learn from this experience. Despite past allegations during games, the recent events have raised new challenges for both Rioli and the club as they navigate the fallout and attempt to support him in making necessary improvements. Rioli is expected to return to play against Geelong the following week, with both Hinkley and Davies urging a constructive dialogue on these sensitive issues within the sport.
