Rugby league luminary Phil Gould was recently celebrated by friends and colleagues from the sport, marking his remarkable 50-year tenure in the game. Organised by Bulldogs chairman Adam Driussi, the surprise event brought together some of Gould’s closest allies, including notable figures like Ricky Stuart, Laurie Daley, Cameron Ciraldo, Cameron George, and Yvonne Sampson, all to honour the general manager of football for the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Among the attendees was Brad Fittler, who reflected on the profound impact Gould had on his life, describing him as a paternal figure who provided support and guidance during his formative years in the sport. Fittler shared, “He opened his house, I went and lived with him for a while,” highlighting the significant role Gould played in his development as a player.

This year marks half a century since Gould began his career with the Penrith Panthers at just 17. His extensive journey has unfolded across multiple roles as a player, coach, commentator, and administrator, earning him respect and admiration throughout the rugby league community. Paul Vautin, a long-time commentary partner of Gould, expressed the privilege of having shared moments with him, noting Gould’s intelligence and suggesting he should lead the game.

The celebration drew heartfelt tributes, including remarks from former Nine chief executive David Gyngell, who praised Gould’s integrity and passion for the sport. According to Gyngell, Gould advocates for fairness and demonstrates unwavering commitment to rugby league.

Gould was visibly moved by the heartfelt tribute, sharing that he had never experienced a birthday celebration before and emphasising that the occasion was primarily for those who influenced his life and career. “This was for other people… they were the stars of my life,” he expressed, thanking everyone for the touching celebration.

The gathering was not only a recognition of Gould’s contributions to rugby league but also a testament to the strong bonds and friendships cultivated through the sport over decades.
