Phil Gould has raised concerns regarding the NSW Blues selectors’ potential choice of Roosters prop Spencer Leniu for the upcoming State of Origin opener, suggesting he may not be the ideal fit. Leniu, who played a key role during the last year’s series, coming off the bench in all three matches, is known for his explosive impact in short bursts. However, Gould contends that this approach may not align with coach Laurie Daley’s needs when finalising the squad for the match at Suncorp Stadium.

Gould expressed his admiration for Leniu but questioned the logic of utilising a player specifically as a 10-minute “impact” sub in such a high-stakes environment. He emphasised the unpredictable nature of Origin games, highlighting the ramifications of potential injuries or suspensions which could significantly alter a team’s dynamics. He noted Leniu has yet to demonstrate a capacity to endure a 70 or 80-minute performance at either club or Origin level, implying that expecting him to do so in a tense and demanding match may be a gamble.

Though Leniu is statistically impressive, averaging 25 minutes with an excellent 98 run metres in his appearances, Gould advocated for a more balanced forward selection. He proposed including four edge forwards in the final 17-man lineup, alongside Terrell May, who is poised for his debut in the front-row rotation. According to Gould, this configuration is crucial for the team’s stamina and effectiveness throughout the match.

While suggesting changes, Gould affirmed his support for Connor Watson as the bench utility but urged a rethink in the spine, firmly endorsing Api Koroisau as the preferred hooker.

In summary, while acknowledging Leniu’s strengths, Gould’s recommendations reflect a strategic mindset focused on resilience and performance continuity in the high-pressure environment of State of Origin rugby.
