After an extraordinary 529 days navigating the wilds of Kangaroo Island, Valerie, a dachshund, has been joyfully reunited with her owners, Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock. The adventurous journey began during a camping excursion in November 2023. As time passed, hope began to fade for Valerie’s safe return. It wasn’t until March that a remote camera captured her unmistakable wink, sparking new enthusiasm in the search.

Motivated by this discovery, Kangala Wildlife Rescue devised a plan to lure the clever canine back using her familiar scents and favourite foods. In a thrilling turn of events, Valerie was successfully trapped just weeks later. “The drive to the trap site was very nerve-wracking, hoping she stayed put,” shared Jared Karran from Kangala Wildlife.

The emotional reunion was overwhelming for Gardner, who recalled, “I bawled my eyes out when she came running up to me. She licked me straight in the face, and I was just in disbelief.” Fishlock added, “It was incredible to finally hold her and give her the big belly rubs we missed.”

Despite the joyful conclusion, the specifics of Valerie’s survival during her time alone in the wilderness remain unknown. “I doubt anyone will ever figure that out; it’s a secret she’ll likely keep,” remarked Fishlock.

The heartwarming end to this tale of endurance highlights the bond between pets and their owners, leaving many to marvel at Valerie’s spirit and resourcefulness.
