Alpine Formula 1 team has confirmed the resignation of Oliver Oakes as team principal after a tenure lasting less than a year. The team currently sits in ninth place in the constructors’ standings and has been considering a switch from rookie driver Jack Doohan to Franco Colapinto. Reports emerging on Tuesday indicated that Doohan had been effectively sacked following a crash during the opening lap of the Miami Grand Prix.

This incident encapsulates a tumultuous year for Doohan, who, as the son of renowned racer Mick Doohan, has faced scrutiny over his performance. The uncertainty surrounding Oakes’ departure casts a shadow over Doohan’s future with the team, with no official confirmation regarding his status as the team’s driver.

In a statement, Alpine expressed gratitude for Oakes’ contributions since his joining last summer, noting assistance in securing a sixth-place finish in the 2024 constructors’ championship. Flavio Briatore is set to step in as executive advisor and will take over Oakes’ responsibilities.

During the Miami Grand Prix, Doohan’s race ended abruptly when he collided with another vehicle on the first lap, subsequently crashing on the second lap. Discussions surrounding his replacement with Colapinto have surfaced, particularly ahead of the upcoming race in Italy later this month. Previously, Oakes had downplayed the prospect of a driver change during the Miami race weekend, asserting that Doohan would continue in his role for the forthcoming event in Imola. As it stands, Doohan has yet to score any championship points this season.
